After the nation’s weightlifters set a remarkably high standard in the opening days of the Games, all eyes turned to the track and field contingent to keep the fire burning. Ashe—the reigning Niger Delta Games 100m champion fondly known as “The Nigerian Nightmare”—did not disappoint, setting off to a flyer and putting the rest of the field on high alert.
The Delta-born speedster earned the distinct honor of being the very first heat winner of the Athletics and Para Athletics programme at the Games, stopping the clock at an impressive 10.10 seconds. Bursting out of the blocks with his trademark explosive power, Ashe executed a flawless race, comfortably pulling away from the pack before decelerating through the finish line with plenty of gas left in the tank.
An upbeat Ashe expressed his delight at the victory, noting that the conditions in Scotland are perfect for him to explode in the upcoming rounds.
“I’m happy. My coach told me to execute and I did that,” Ashe said after the race. “I want to do more in the semis and final. The track looks fast and I love Glasgow.”
His ability to comfortably clock 10.10 seconds while saving his top-end speed serves as a massive confidence booster for the Nigerian camp. It is yet another testament to the quality of talent projected by the Niger Delta Games, sending a clear warning to his international rivals ahead of the medal rounds.
Ashe won’t be carrying the nation’s hopes alone. His first-place progression spearheads a formidable Nigerian presence in tomorrow’s 100m semi-finals, where he will be joined by the country’s fastest man, Kanyisola Ajayi, and Nicholas Fakorede Adekalu.
