With just days to the start of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, excitement continues to build as Team Nigeria steps up its final preparations for one of the biggest multi-sport events in the Commonwealth.
Among the athletes expected to spearhead Nigeria’s medal quest is sprint star Favour Ashe, who says the team is fully prepared and determined to make the nation proud in Glasgow.
Ashe, one of Nigeria’s leading sprinters and the men’s 100m champion at the Niger Delta Games 2025, believes the team’s blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talents gives Nigeria every reason to be optimistic.
“We have prepared well and everyone is focused on giving their best. Team Nigeria has a strong tradition at the Commonwealth Games, and we are confident we can compete for medals and make Nigerians proud,” Ashe said. according to punch newspaper
Already renowned on the international athletics circuit, Ashe added another title to his impressive résumé when he claimed gold in the men’s 100m at the Niger Delta Games 2025, further underlining the quality of competition at the regional festival.
The XXIII Commonwealth Games will officially begin on Thursday, July 23, with a spectacular Opening Ceremony at The Hydro in Glasgow. Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla will join thousands of athletes, officials, volunteers and spectators from across the Commonwealth to officially declare the Games open.
More than 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories will compete for 215 gold medals across 10 sports over 11 days of competition.
A major highlight of the Opening Ceremony will be the official declaration of the Games by King Charles III, who will read the message placed inside the King’s Baton on Commonwealth Day before the historic 500-day King’s Baton Relay concludes in Glasgow. For the first time, all 74 Batons will be reunited, symbolising the unity, diversity and shared values of the Commonwealth.
The relay also promoted the Commonwealth Clean Ocean Plastics Campaign, engaging communities across member nations in efforts to prevent one million pieces of plastic from entering Commonwealth waters.
As Team Nigeria prepares for another shot at Commonwealth glory, expectations remain high that athletes like Favour Ashe will lead from the front, as Nigeria aims to add to its rich legacy at the Games.
